CO

Superior

Established in 1896, Superior began as a coal mining hub, named for the “superior” quality of its coal. The town thrived until the Industrial Mine closed in 1945, after which it transitioned into a quiet ranching and farming community. The population remained around 250 until the late 1990s, when residential development spurred significant growth. Today, Superior boasts a population of over 13,000 and features a blend of historical charm and modern amenities.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do in Superior. The town offers over 159 acres of open space and trails, including the Coalton Trail and the Rock Creek Trail, perfect for hiking and biking.

For dining, residents and visitors can enjoy a variety of restaurants, such as Brunelleschi’s and the Sport Stable’s Stable Bar & Grill.  Superior’s location provides easy access to nearby cities—it’s just 10 miles east of Boulder and 18 miles north of Denver—making it an ideal spot for those who appreciate a small-town feel with big-city conveniences. For winter sports enthusiasts, ski resorts like Eldora Mountain are within a comfortable drive, ensuring that adventure is never far away.

The housing market in Superior reflects its desirability. While homes in the area tend to be more affordable than neighboring Louisville and Boulder, the quality, size, and finishes of homes can be outstanding.

Superior was one of the two major areas impacted by the Marshall Fire in late 2021 (along with Louisville), but it's been building back quickly. While the original Old Town itself was mostly destroyed, new neighborhoods have been cropping up, offering a great blend of modern living and local conveniences. The new "Downtown Superior" is hopping, and will be a premiere destination once completed.

The town’s commitment to quality living hasn’t gone unnoticed; it has been recognized as one of the best places to live in Colorado.
